It’s a lightweight, street-oriented single. You’re sitting low to the ground, so it’s easy to handle and convenient at stoplights. Although the 397cc air-cooled, four-valve engine may seem powerful if you’re transitioning from a scooter, you’ll find it has enough power to get you where you need to go without tempting you to lose control. You’ll like its traditional semi-double-cradle tube-steel chassis, and the real spoke wheels and bias-ply Kenda tires. The bike also sports chrome dual shocks, old-fashioned speedometer and tach, and teardrop-shaped 3.4-gallon tank. Brakes are a 280mm disc and two-piston caliper in front, with a drum behind. And the five-speed shifter is tight and smooth. The design goes back to Honda’s CB400SS, for which they partnered with a Chinese motorcycle company named Shineray. Honda stopped selling the bike in 2006, so Shineray developed its own version that added fuel injection among other features. Genuine got interested. They wanted a product to offer their customers who were ready to move beyond a scooter. It took a few years for market fluctuations to ease and regulatory challenges to get satisfied, but this was always going to be a reliable (and retro-looking) bike, so it was worth the wait. And it comes with a two-year, 24,000-mile warranty.
